About

Welcome to the Department of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) at the School of Computing (SoC), the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC), at George Mason University. 

Since the beginning of the department in 2002, our faculty, staff, and students have worked together to grow IST into a leader in research, education, and service not just within the University but also in Virginia, USA, and worldwide.

In research, IST contributes to developing state-of-the-art theories, empirical findings, computational pipelines, and interactive design in the core research areas of  (1) Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, (2) Data Science, (3) Cybersecurity, (4) Education Technology, (5) Health Informatics, (6) Human-Centered Computing, and (7) Smart Communities. Every year, our faculty publish cutting-edge research in top-notching venues in the fields of Information Science and Computer Science.

In education, we offer a BS in Information Technology, an MS in Applied Information Technology, an MS in Information Systems (joint with Computer Science), and an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Information Technology through the CEC. In addition, we provide various certificate and concentration options including a concentration in the interdisciplinary MS in Data Analytics Engineering offered by the CEC and a successful suite of programs for the Intelligence Community.

Combining our expertise in research and education, IST is uniquely positioned to prepare undergraduates and graduates to master theoretical foundations and applied research to develop successful careers as software engineers, data analysts, data engineers, data scientists, machine learning engineers, UX researchers, and academic scholars, among others.

We are excited about our two decades of success and our trajectory. We look forward to collaborating with our growing body of students and faculty to continue to build the future.
