Data science research at IST is driven by the goal of enabling data-driven knowledge generation and producing actionable insights to tackle real-world challenges. 

IST faculty bring deep, multidisciplinary expertise across the full spectrum of data analytics, ranging from small to large-scale, and structured to unstructured data across diverse application domains. This breadth enables us to approach problems from unique, domain-informed perspectives and to design targeted research methodologies that combine statistics, mathematics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to extract meaningful insights from complex datasets.

Our research spans a wide array of data science subfields, including big data computing, data mining, databases, information retrieval, web mining, intelligence analysis, knowledge engineering and ontologies, and the law and ethics of data science. IST researchers have demonstrated sustained excellence in these areas, advancing both foundational methods and high-impact applications.
