To address the accelerating demand for AI expertise across sectors, the Department of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) at GMU is launching two new academic concentrations this fall 2025: one at the undergraduate level and one at the graduate level.

The new graduate concentration, MS AIT: Applied AI Technologies, equips students with both the theoretical foundations and hands-on skills required to thrive in today’s dynamic AI landscape. The curriculum emphasizes cutting-edge developments in artificial intelligence—including large language models, generative AI, and multimodal learning—and prioritizes real-world application. Students will gain experience in developing, deploying, and managing AI systems that drive innovation and address complex challenges across industries.

“This is what we need to meet the demands of a workforce that is experiencing a tsunami of change,” said Associate Chair Ioulia Rytikova. “Our students need these skills now.”

At the undergraduate level, IST is introducing the BS IT: AI-Driven Solutions concentration, designed to prepare undergraduate students for AI-enhanced IT roles that increasingly demand facility with AI solutions, whether it’s integrating AI into enterprise systems, using machine learning to improve cybersecurity and data analytics, or leveraging generative AI tools to streamline business processes and user experiences.

“Our undergraduate students will be prepared to enter the AI workforce and pursue advanced degrees that expect them to be AI-literate from day one,” said Khondkar Islam, Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies.
