Northern Virginia Community College (VCCS) Students
VCCS Students interested in transferring to Mason should first contact their VCCS advisors/counselors, as they are trained to help students know which paths are the best to take in the VCCS system to transfer to Mason.
Selective Transfer Admission
Effective spring 2023, the Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT) program will become a selective transfer admission major. As a result, transfer applicants for spring 2023 and beyond must meet the following requirements for direct admission to the program:
- Earn a 2.85 cumulative GPA
- Complete ENG 111 and ENG 112 with grades of A, B, or C
- Complete one of the following MTH courses with a grade of A, B, or C: MTH 154, 167, 245, 261, or 263. MTH 261 and MTH 245 are recommended, given they are major specific requirements.
Resources
To help students decide which courses they would like to take to transfer to Mason, we have provided a helpful guide of how courses will transfer to Mason's BS INFT from the VCCS system, here. Be sure to communicate with your VCCS advisors to discuss each semester’s course options and your program's requirements.
The only office authorized to evaluate transcripts and verify how courses are accepted is the Transfer Admissions office. Their office and website have many resources available to help students determine how prior institution’s credits could be accepted at Mason.
- Transfer Credit Policy: All transfer policies
- Transfer Credit Matrix: See how the courses you’ve taken at other institutions will be accepted at Mason
- Mason Core Equivalency: See how your VCCS courses apply to the Mason Core

NOTES:
The Department of Information Sciences and Technology encourages VCCS students to meet the requirements for and enroll as GAA transfers.
*UNIV 100 is not required for the BS INFT but will satisfy general elective credit
**Mason Core options are available at catalog.gmu.edu/mason-core. Students may select any of the course options listed here to satisfy the associated Mason Core requirement. Be sure to communicate with your VCCS advisors/counselors to determine which VCCS course(s) satisfy your A.S. Degree.
***If a student has a lower-level substitution for an upper-level course, they will need to still earn a minimum of 45 upper-level credits in order to graduate. A student may opt to take their Mason Core courses as upper level (300/400 level) credits, declare a second concentration, declare a minor, or take general electives at the upper level in order to satisfy this requirement.
Starting Spring 2023:
- Students with credit for ITE 170, ITD 256, and ITP 120 are eligible to pair with Mason Bridge Courses (IT 193, IT 196, IT 194, respectively) to satisfy IT 213, IT 106, and IT 214, in summer 2023.
- If a new admit earns a B or higher in ITE 170, they will receive a substitution for IT 213.
- If a new admit earns a B or higher in ITD 256, they will receive a substitution for IT 214.
- If a new admit earns a B or higher in ITP 120, they will receive a substitution for IT 106.
- If a new admit earns a B or higher in ITP 150, they will receive a substitution for IT 109.
ENG 111 will continue to transfer to fulfill ENGH 101 through spring 2024.
ENG 125 will continue to transfer to fulfill the Mason Core literature requirement until 2025 (as published at https://transferguide.admissions.gmu.edu/ait-bs/)
