Human-Centered Computing

Creating technology that truly benefits people requires a deep understanding of the individuals who use it.

At IST, our mission is to thoughtfully and iteratively design human-centered systems that enhance well-being, boost productivity and creativity, and ultimately contribute to a better society. Through rigorous empirical research on how people interact with technology, IST faculty inform the development of social technologies and AI systems across a wide range of areas, including augmented and virtual reality, computer graphics, creativity support, crowdsourcing, human-AI collaboration, interactive machine learning, and mobile and wearable computing.

We also advance the research methods used to study these systems. Our work results in innovative tools with broad, ethical societal impact and is regularly featured in premier HCI and related venues such as CHI, TOCHI, and CSCW.
